The age old, My A/C won't get cold!

Ok, I have a Marine Air Systems unit in a 1985 29' Silverton Sport Cruiser. Its a 9,000 BTU unit and the compressor looks like its right out of the box. Anyway, I have great waterflow and discharge. When I turn the knob to "Run" I hear a click and the condenser (I think that's the term) kicks on. I feel the copper tubes and one feels very cool that leads to the condenser however only hot air gets blown out. After about 3-4 minutes the breaker trips.

I know this is a vague description but when I know exactly what specific info is needed to diagnose I will also send pictures if need be :)

First Terminology…

  • The compressor is the part that runs (it compresses)
  • The evaporator is the part that the air sucks thru (and gets cold in the cooling mode)
  • The condenser is the part the water runs thru (it should get warm in the cooling mode)

In the heat mode…The condenser & evaporator switch jobs…So if your condenser is getting cold, your unit is running in the heat mode, and i suspect you may have a thermostat problem making the unit run in heat when you want cool.

Get back to me about what is cool & what is warm and we can go from there…

Ok, the evaporator feels warm. The fins are clear and I can feel air getting sucked in. One tube that comes into the unit gets cold and the other that leaves the unit feels hot. After 1-2 minutes of operation it will trip the breaker. The condenser feels hot on the top portion and warm towards the bottom.

Do you still have great water flow overboard ?…Tripping the breaker is usually an indication that you may not..

Is the compressor cycling on & off ?…That's another indication of not enough water flow thru the unit…

When I turn the switch to "start" there is great water flow overboard. I have to be honest and didn't even think to look after I turned the switch to "run" when the unit is running. I will check that next time I go to the boat.
