Marine-Aire becoming less effective over time

I have a King-Aire 16k unit in a 1981 CAL 39 Sail boat. I have been in a marina in NC for the past 6 weeks and the weather has been beastly, so it has been running quite a bit. It seems to have become less effective and I am trying to decide whats up. The evaporator is cold but not freezing, and it is fairly consistant top to bottom. The water runs through a coil, and it is quite warm, I really do not want to touch it if I don't need to, but it doesn't burn my hand. The compressor doesn't seem warm. I have had to clean the strainer of sea grass which is prevalent in the marina, and it seems a little more effective after I do that. I also just cleaned the filter on the return side of the evaporator which seemed to help. There is a fan on the return vent from the cabin to the unit which I run when it seems to be struggling, but the unit is underneath the primary berth, so I sometimes turn it off to get a little less fan noise so I can sleep.

Any ideas?

Mark~

These systems work on a 15-18 degree exchange…Meaning the air coming out should be 15-18 degrees cooler than what enters the unit…

If you take a thermometer and place it at the unit's return fins (not the return grill) get a reading, then stick it into a discharge and read a 15-18 drop….The unit is likely doing all that it can do…

The fan you mention at the return grill is interesting, but should not be needed unless your unit is placed somewhere that it is getting heat from another source such as the bilge…Yes this will add heat load, and also affect the discharge temp…It's also why I say to test with the thermometer at the unit & not the grill to see if the unit is doing all it can….

After the first test as described you could try it again, but this time read at the return grill & then the discharge…This will give you an idea of how much (if any) heat you are picking up from other than the cabin…

If your condenser coil (water coil ) has never been acid flushed to remove scale…Then I'd say it's time, and you could realise much better efficiency & performance by doing so.

It could also be that it is just that hot…It's a typical complaint this time of year that "My A/C Just Doesnt Seem To Cool As Well"….Well yeah it's much hotter now than it was in May/June….

Steve~
