I have a late 80's marine air system I think it is a 6K unit. When I turn it on the water flow is good, the air intake is fine. the compressor kicks on and air is blowing out of the vents strongly but not cold. The last couple of seasons it was cold. I have noticed that the bottom tube on the condensor or evaporator (not sure which is which) is ice cold but the rest of the half circle coils sticking out are not cold. On my panel I have a low freon light but that is not coming on. If it is freon can I recharge myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are out of R-22 and must have a leak….

If you could buy R-22 (license needed) or get some from someone & had gauges…Yes you could charge it yourself…But that does not find the leak…

These systems are not like cars that have rubber hoses & compressor shaft seals…They should not leak, and it's very bad on the compressors when they do run low on freon…even when just a little low it causes compressor overheating.

Great, I have called a marine AC tech as I do not have a license. Really good advise. I really appreciate it. One other question. Do you think it could be a clog in the evaporator coils ? If so what can be done? also If it is just freon R-22 how do you seal the leak? Thanks again
