Cruisair 3 knob WFAH7 (I think) will not keep the compressor running. "Start" will start the march pump and fan, "run" will start the compressor for about 5 seconds then stop (slight hissing sound at the evap that stops). Does this as soon as it's started. On "run", fan/pump will continue to run, and the "hiss" will cycle about every 4-5 min. Is this the notorious low freon or something else? If it is low freon, can r414b be used? Let me know where to start or if you need more info.

Thanks,

Rich

Rich~

The WFAH 7 has no low pressure switch…But does have a High pressure switch….

If it's cycling it's from High Pressure…Not Low, and for it to cycle on High pressure it must have enough freon to do so…Put low freon on the back burner.

With the control in the run position, go to the unit & feel the water coil when the compressor is running…If it gets hot on the bottom you have high pressure.

High Pressure means lack of water flow or a scaled up water coil.

There is no change in temp on the compressor or water coil.

Another thing is when it goes from start to run the fan will slow down and then gradually come back to original speed.

Also when the compressor runs (for the short ammount of time) it almost sounds like the noise you hear when filling a bottle with water when it gets near the top (if that makes any sense) and then the compressor shuts off.

OK…What you are describing is a compressor having a hard time starting & then tripping it's thermal overload (on the compressor)

The only thing you can try is replacing the start capacitor & relay plus the run cap….The run cap is the metal one & if it's expanded like a frozen soda can then it's bad and you might get lucky just replacing that.

Barring that…I'm afraid you need two units….

I have a bid in on the 16 and will head to the boat to look at the 7's caps. Thanks for your knowledge and the great place to share it. I'll let you know what happens.

Got both caps out and the relay. The smaller cap has some crud on the top but the numbers are readable for the replacement. The larger one looks fine but I can't find any numbers on it for a replacement. What are the specs or part number for this cap? Also the relay terminal for the white wires (bottom left two terminals) looks pretty nasty so hopefully this is it.

Just remember that the caps can store a charge so be carefull when handling….

New relay and start cap are in and the compressor now runs but no cold air (run cap is sill on order). Flushed the water coil with some muriatic acid I had and no change. Compressor was around 145F, smaller copper lines on top between comp and control box range from 100 to 135 (three seperate lines and not sure what each one is off top of my head), and water inlet is about 86. When the 16 gets drained and refilled I plan on having them check the pressures on the other units while there but won't know until then.

Any advice on what to do or am I stuck until there is a set of gauges on there?

Sounds like that one is low on refrigerant…Yep Gauges…Don't damage it any further by running it until you get it checked…
