I have a R-22 WFAH-16 with a 3 knob switch that is acting funny. From what I remember the "start" position would also start the march pump and it no longer does that (will start march pump on "run" though). The other two units (one is fine, one will be a seperate post) will start the march pump on start. Back to the 16- "start" starts only the fan, but "run" is fan and starts the water and there is a LARGE drain on the electrical (2 30A/120V) that slows the fans/dims the lights considerably. When switched to run, the compressor unit will make one heavy click sound and when switched back to start will do the same click again. Is this a frozen compressor or should I be looking at something else? If it's a frozen comp, will a WJAH16 be an easy swap (can get one on ebay for one more day). Thanks for your insight and let me know if you need anymore info.

Rich~

Sounds like you do have a locked compressor & the change from F to J model should not be a problem.

When I take the old unit out, what should I do to drain out all the old lines to prevent contaminating the "new" unit?

Got it on ebay for $228 and hope the hookup goes smooth and it runs.

Rich~

You need someone licenced to handle refrigerants, that has the equipment, tools & experience…You can do the labor on the change out, but when it come to the rest…You really need help.

I share a building with a HVAC company that will do my old capture and new charge. Just wondering if there is any trick to a marine unit as opposed to a residential system.

Nope…Still a R-22 system…Your HVAC guys should be able to handle it just fine  Cool

It would be their preference on if they want to install a bi-flow (heat pump) filter/drier, or install a suction line burn out filter/drier in-line with the compressor suction line (on the J unit after the reversing valve)…They may want to do this before you install the unit for better access to make the solder joints.

Flushing the lines is an option too, but the kit to do it can be more expensive than a filter/drier.

The replacement arrives today. Is there a way I can bench test thie unit before installing it on the boat?

With what you might have at home…Only to see if it runs (don't do it for more than 10 seconds) by connecting power to Purple (compressor) and White (neutral) inside the WJAH electrical box (on the terminal strip)

What about on the HVAC bench? Or should I just get the filter drier put on and then hook it to the boat and hope for the best?

Can't say what they would have to test it with…

I would think they would need a matching 16K air handler, which is not standard in the home industry.

They can check to see if it will pull vacuum, which is generally a good sign that the valves are good.
