A/C system stuck on heat and kicking breaker after running a couple minutes!

I have a 12000 btu Marine Air System. Reverse cycle. Three knob system. It's in a 1986 Cruiser Inc. Looks original. The system was working fine and then the boat took on a little water (salt water) and now the system is stuck in heat mode and then kicks the breaker after a minute or two. I'm pretty handy and know car A/C well but this is a bit different. I did some resurch and then I checked around and noticed some wire connections on the front of the compressor (orange, black, white,)(i have a wiring diagram but it doesn't tell me what they are except they come from the capastor) that seem to have gotton wet. I also checked the reversing valve along with the electrical component there and it all looks good and doesn't seem to have gotton wet. Those are a little higher up. Also the water pump seems to be working fine with proper flow. Any ideas? Do you need more info? Thanks!!!

Harvey~

I would first start with disconnecting power (probably best to pull the unit out if it's self contained) and wash the whole unit with soapy water & the garden hose to remove any salt residue…Then let it dry for days…

Salt is an amazing thing and can make connections where connections are not wanted…

After cleaning, and if you are still stuck in heat…For this test I would either cut one of the reversing valve wires on the unit, or remove that electromagnetic coil (single nut holding it on) If you do remove it be sure to stick a screwdriver in the hole of the coil to absorb it's heat & keep it from melting itself…Otherwise just clip one of it's wires where it can be butt connected back later (no need to remove coil for this)

With the coil removed or clipped…The unit should only cool…If that's the case, then all is good in the unit & we have a control problem.

If the unit still heats…We have a stuck reversing valve.

Steve,
I removed the electromaginet right away because I had already washed the unit well with fresh water before. I put a screw driver in the hole and fired it up. The A/C worked well and blew cold without popping the breaker!!! Unfortunately the electromaginet started smoking and made the screw driver black after running for a few minutes! Do you think it's still OK?
Can you let me know what and how to test the next thing to make it run properly?
Thank you very much for your assistance and I will definately purchase parts from you if needed!!!

Thanks!!!

Harvey~

I only meant for you to remove the electro magnet & stick a screwdriver in it for a test to see if it would cool…Not to run it that way for very long at all…I don't know if you have ruined the coil or not…If it will slide back on it may be ok, and now days it's hard to find replacements for the older coils, Ranco (who builds the valve & coil) has made several changes in recent years and none use the same coil…

I would say that if you don't need heat…Just clip one of those wires for now…Until…

Next is you likely have a thermostat problem that caused this whole thing….A repalcement Heat/Cool T-stat is Part # 4060603 and retails for $83.00…

Unfortunately not…As of yet anyway…

You will either need to call me with a MC or Visa # Or E-mail it if you feel comfortable with that.

Hmm minus the salt water getting on my unit it sounds very familiar to my problem. Maybe I will look at the same wires and give it a try.
