Gotcha A-OK Steve,

I do understand about diminishing returns on an older system.

There are many factors to consider. 1.) Before i brought the boat here she lived her life in northerly climates.

There may not be that much actual "use" on the system. 2.) I really don't want to spend my days maintaining

3 units when I only have 1 now. 3.) It will require some pretty extensive modifications to locate, install, and run

duct work for 3  units compared to the copper freon lines now in place.

Cons: Money may be spent, but there may be frequent breakdowns.///It may just have been inoperable so long it is beyond

reasonable limits to repair.///a/c systems have a funny way of just going to $#it from inactivity.

I know that ultimately how much i spend is up to me, but what do you think would be a reasonable amount to spend "checking

it out"?

thanks

I think that would be very hard to accurately guess Phillip…And what I guess I am trying to convey…It's not just the possible freon leaks…

Since I can't see the condition of the duplex unit…Is it very rusty ?…What do the air handlers look like ?…Corroded & dirty ? Make sure you check the back sides too…

What does the electrical look like ?…Old cracked, faded colored wires, burnt spots ?

How do the white electrical plugs on the side of the duplex box look ?…Yellow with black spots ? are they distorted or melted ?

Also even though they are on one base…That duplex is really two systems that share the same electrical box…

It was a disadvantage because if any of the major components fail or have failed in half of that unit…It will require replacement by a complete single unit that would take up more space next to the duplex in order to keep the half that is still operational…Plus the addition of a pump relay box to energize the pump from the new condensing unit electrics

The male/female plugs on the side of that old electrical box are a constant source of problems (yes I can still get the parts I think) and are not really setup for running another unit easily…but Yes it can be done…all this adds up…

Replacement compressors are over $600 now days…Not to mention the labor rates…

When that unit was designed…it was designed for a time when things were economically repaired…Today is quite different…

BTW…Self contained units do not install in the engine room…They are put in the bottom of lockers, under bunks, or anywhere there is space enough…Duct runs are usually very short…Especially in a boat such as your Chris that usually has tons of unused/un-utilised areas…

Steve~
